Album Cover Art

August 25, 2009

A week or two ago I was asked to see what I could come up for a local band that wanted to use a lime and a shot glass as their cover for their CD that is coming out soon.  I have to be honest, I though long and hard about this one; it was a bit intimating.  How should I light it?  One light or two?  Grids?  Reflectors? What is the background?  Bright? Dark? Moody?  Etc etc.

With a little bit of influence from Zack Arias and his One Light Workshop off I went.  And below is the initial result, I am not sure what they will think.  I sent them a few to look over today and I am sitting here with bated breath waiting for their feedback.  They will either love the samples I sent over or they will hate them;.  OK, I guess it could be in between as well.  More than anything, this was an experience.  I am very used to working with people.  But a product?  Well, that is very different.  But I guess the good news is that they don’t talk back!

Not sure if #1 or #2 is my fav.  But I think it is #2.

Ok..Changing my mind. Love the color of #2 but do think it detracts from the shot glass. #1 has a more realisitc, Pub feel. #1 for me.

  2. Susan says:

Hard call-I keep going back and forth between 1 and 2…I think the first one edges it out. Nice work!

  3. Liang says:

right after a shot of patron? i can sense the lime and the salt here! =] Great shots man!

  4. I like the concept, and #1 is my favorite one. That one works best light-wise and composition wise. I can totally see an album cover in that one. Well done! Let us know what they thought of your pictures :)

  5. 2 is the magic number. awesome shots christopher!

  6. Ajay says:

Looks like someone’s been drinking a lot. But joking apart, each one of them is a quality shot.

  7. rian says:

i’m going for the first shot, it’s simpler and the background doesn’t clash as much with the subjects.. :D good luck, man!

  8. I really like the second one ! The processing is very nice ! Excellent choice for the composition of your photos !! congrats !!

  9. Pavan Kaul says:

A wonderful series Chris…I love the light and selective focus in these shots…great work!

  10. Diane says:

what a fun experience! I like all 3 but likely think the 2nd and 3rd will be more in contention because of the outstanding backgrounds. Love the details, the lighting, and the concept of tipping the shot glass over too. Very good work

  11. Ginnie says:

Good for you, Christopher…getting out of your comfort zone. Please let us know what they decide!!

I think the first one for an albim cover I really like the second one but think it woul dmake a better watercolor portrait

  13. cbloor says:

No it is not; trust me, I made sure of that. The crazy thing is that I could not figure out where that refection was coming from. I spent 30 minutes trying to figure it out. Never did. My wife thinks is the slate tiles tat the glass was sitting on. Who knows. Might be……….

  14. Andy says:

I also like the second one the best! Be sure to let us know what the band thinks!

  15. Brendon says:

Actually I like #1. The glass stands out more if you were just looking at a cover. Also I like the less colorful background.

  16. Brian Bork says:

Is that your face (refelction) in the bottom of the shot glass? First photo

  17. Brian Bork says:

Nice Job! I think 2 also. Love the colors. Looks like a great oil painting.
